The KENNAMETAL 1770917 is a carbide threading insert in the Top Notch series, designed for both internal and external thread-cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the NT3LCK geometry, it carries a PVD-applied TiAlN finish that improves heat resistance and wear life at higher cutting speeds. The insert covers a partial profile 60-degree thread standard, handling external pitches from 2.50 to 4.00 mm (6 to 11 TPI) and an internal pitch of 4.00 mm (6 TPI). At 0.1949 inches (4.95 mm) thick with a corner radius of 0.0134 inches (0.34 mm), it is a left-hand insert suited for right-to-left threading passes. Machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments install and replace these inserts during scheduled tooling changes.
This insert fits threading applications in general machining environments where ISO material grades C3 and C4 workpiece materials are common, including cast irons and hardened steels. The K-style chipbreaker geometry is intended for threading passes where chip control is critical to surface finish and thread integrity. It is well suited for moderate to high production runs on lathes equipped with a Top Notch-compatible toolholder system. Threading inserts are installed and replaced by machinists or CNC tooling technicians following machine-specific lockout and toolholder torque procedures. Power down or place the machine in a safe state before accessing the turret or toolholder. Use the correct torque wrench and seating screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to avoid insert rocking or premature breakage. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
