The KENNAMETAL 1743780 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external Acme thread cutting at 8 threads per inch (TPI). It carries the ISO designation LT16ER8ACME and is finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating that increases surface hardness and heat resistance under continuous threading loads. The insert is right-hand oriented and features a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle with a thickness of 0.143 inches (3.44 mm). Grade KC5025 is a coated carbide grade engineered for threading in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators working in production or maintenance environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for external Acme thread applications on lathes and turning centers in both production machining and job shop environments. The Acme thread form is commonly found on lead screws, power transmission components, and linear actuator hardware. The LT16ER size designation corresponds to the ER insert style and a size code of 16, making it compatible with standard LT16 threading toolholders. The TiAlN coating extends tool life when threading work-hardened and abrasion-resistant materials including stainless steel and superalloys.
Designed for use in LT16 ER-style laydown threading toolholders. Specific toolholder compatibility should be verified against KENNAMETAL toolholder documentation for the LT16ER pocket geometry.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine fully stopped and locked out before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the insert clamp to the correct engagement — do not overtighten by feel alone. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Verify thread form with a thread gauge on the first part after any insert change.
