The KENNAMETAL 1743768 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external BSPT thread cutting at 11 threads per inch. It carries the ISO code LT16ER11BSPT and is finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating that extends tool life when cutting ferrous and high-temperature alloy workpieces. The insert seats in a right-hand orientation and fits standard ER-style laydown toolholders with a 16-size insert code. At 3.44 mm (0.1430 inches) thick with a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle, this insert is sized for precision threading on CNC lathes and turning centers in production and job-shop environments. Machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for external BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. It is a single-piece solid carbide construction intended for high-accuracy thread profiles where consistent flank geometry and dimensional repeatability are required across production runs. The TiAlN PVD coating supports higher cutting speeds and improved wear resistance compared to uncoated carbide, making it a practical choice for both moderate and high-volume threading cycles.
Designed for use in ER-style laydown threading toolholders accepting size-16 inserts. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before indexing. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications for the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as solid carbide inserts are brittle and susceptible to cracking under uneven clamping load.
