The KENNAMETAL 1724296 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting at 16 threads per inch (TPI). Carrying the ISO code LT16ER16UN and manufactured grade KC5010, this insert features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process for extended tool life in abrasive and high-temperature cutting environments. The inscribed circle measures 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) and the insert thickness is 0.1430 inches (3.44 mm). It is intended for right-hand external threading operations on CNC lathes and turning centers operated by machinists and toolroom professionals.
This insert is suited for threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The KC5010 grade with TiAlN PVD coating is well matched to interrupted cuts and materials that generate high cutting temperatures. Typical applications include production threading of fasteners, fittings, and hydraulic components where consistent thread form and dimensional accuracy are required across high-volume runs.
Designed for use in toolholders accepting LT16ER-style laydown threading inserts with an ER insert style and 16-size insert code. Confirmed compatible workpiece materials are steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium.
Installation is performed by machinists on CNC or manual turning equipment. Power down and lock out the spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Ensure the insert pocket and clamping screw are free of chips and debris before torquing the clamp to the toolholder specification. Verify thread form and pitch with a thread gauge on the first part before committing to a production run.
