The KENNAMETAL 1712609 is a laydown-style external threading insert designed for precision UN thread profiles on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured from solid carbide in the KC5010 grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert delivers hardness and heat resistance suited for high-speed threading operations. It is configured for right-hand external threading at 28 threads per inch (TPI) with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.1430 inches (3.44 mm). The ISO designation LT16ER28UNCB reflects the ER insert style, size code 16, and CB chipbreaker geometry. Machinists and CNC tooling specialists install this insert as a replaceable cutting element in compatible laydown threading toolholders.
This insert is suited for threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, K, and S. It is intended for external UN thread production at 28 TPI in precision turning environments, including job shops, production machining facilities, and maintenance repair operations where UN-threaded components are manufactured or refurbished. The CB chipbreaker geometry aids chip control during threading passes on these material groups.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement laydown threading insert for toolholders accepting ER-style size 16 inserts in external UN threading applications. Verify toolholder compatibility with the LT16ER28UNCB ISO designation before installation.
Installation is performed by CNC machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing the insert. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification using a calibrated torque driver. Inspect the seating pocket for chips or debris before clamping to avoid insert rocking or premature edge failure.
