The KENNAMETAL 1712605 is a laydown-style carbide threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting at 20 threads per inch (TPI). Manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert is built for high-wear resistance and thermal stability in demanding threading operations. It carries the ER insert style designation with a 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.1430 inches (3.44 mm). The CB chipbreaker geometry supports chip control during single-point threading passes. This insert is installed and replaced by machinists and CNC lathe operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for right-hand external threading on UN-standard thread forms at 20 TPI. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. It is appropriate for both production threading runs and repair threading applications where consistent thread form and tool life are priorities. The KC5010 grade designation reflects a PVD TiAlN-coated carbide formulation developed for interrupted and continuous threading on hard and abrasive materials. Typical applications are found in turning centers and CNC lathes configured for external threading cycles.
Designed for use in ER-style laydown threading toolholders accepting a size 16 insert with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle and a 0.1551 inch hole diameter. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium per manufacturer specifications.
Installation is performed by machinists using the appropriate torx or hex key per the toolholder manufacturer's seating procedure. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is de-energized before indexing or replacing inserts. Verify insert seating and clamping integrity before resuming cutting operations. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's recommended clamping torque specification - do not overtorque, as this can fracture the carbide substrate.
