The KENNAMETAL 1712601 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread turning operations. Carrying the ISO code LT16ER16UNCB, this insert features an ER-style geometry with a CB chipbreaker and a PVD-applied TiAlN coating over a KC5010 carbide grade substrate. It cuts right-hand external threads at 16 threads per inch (TPI) and seats in standard LT16 laydown toolholders. The 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle and 0.1430 inch (3.44 mm) thickness conform to established ER16 insert geometry standards. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators working in production threading environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for threading steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. It is commonly applied in CNC turning centers and manual lathes performing external single-point threading passes on fastener profiles, fittings, and precision-threaded components requiring a standard UN thread form at 16 TPI. The KC5010 carbide grade with TiAlN PVD coating is optimized for general-purpose to difficult-to-machine material threading, delivering consistent thread form and extended tool life across these material categories.
Designed for use in LT16 laydown threading toolholders accepting ER-style inserts with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle and 0.1430 inch thickness. Confirm toolholder seat specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secured in the turret before seating or replacing the insert. Use the correct torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer - do not over-torque the clamp, as this can fracture the carbide. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before each insert change to maintain thread form accuracy.
