The KENNAMETAL 1679779 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for right-hand external thread cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the KC5010 grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, it delivers wear resistance and thermal stability across a broad range of threading applications. The insert cuts a partial profile 60-degree thread form and covers a pitch range of 0.50 to 3.00 mm (48 to 8 TPI), making it versatile across common metric and unified thread standards. It carries a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle and measures 0.1430 inches (3.44 mm) thick. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for external threading operations on ferrous and non-ferrous materials in both production and maintenance machining settings. The CB chipbreaker geometry is designed to control chip flow during threading passes, reducing the risk of chip entanglement on the workpiece or toolholder. Typical applications include threading steel, stainless, and similar machinable alloys on manual or CNC turning equipment. The partial profile 60-degree form allows the same insert to cut both unified and metric 60-degree thread families within its pitch range.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use threading insert for toolholders accepting a 16ER-style laydown insert with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and 0.1551-inch hole diameter.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver to secure the insert to the specified toolholder clamp torque listed in the toolholder manufacturer documentation. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or debris before seating the insert to ensure proper contact and prevent premature edge failure.
