The KENNAMETAL 1623278 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for high-precision finishing operations on aluminum and non-ferrous metals. It carries the ANSI designation VBGT331HP and the ISO designation VBGT160404, and is coated with TiB2 via a PVD process for high wear resistance. The KC5410 grade is engineered specifically for non-ferrous workpiece materials, delivering consistent performance across turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications. With a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape and a positive rake geometry, this insert reduces cutting forces and promotes clean chip evacuation during light finishing passes.

This insert is suited for finishing cuts on aluminum, copper, brass, and other non-ferrous metals in both production and job-shop environments. The HP chip breaker geometry targets fine surface finishes at controlled depths of cut. With two cutting edges per insert and a screw-on holding method, it fits standard VBGT-style toolholders commonly used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes. The neutral hand orientation allows use in a variety of turning directions without requiring a handed toolholder.

Compatibility

Designed as an OEM-style replacement for VBGT-style screw-on toolholders accepting ANSI code VBGT331 or ISO code VBGT160404 inserts used in turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring setups on non-ferrous materials.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and tighten the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified value. Inspect the cutting edge and seating surface for chips or debris before each insert index.
