The KENNAMETAL 1601890 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VNMG332FF geometry, coated with TiAlN via a PVD process and graded KC5010. It belongs to the KENLOC series and is designed for finishing operations on a CNC or manual lathe. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a honed cutting edge style. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/32-inch corner radius, this insert delivers high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible VNMG-style toolholders for precision turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications.
This insert is suited for finishing cuts in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and aluminum. Its KC5010 grade provides high to moderate wear resistance and toughness across P, M, K, N, and S workpiece material codes. The FF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing, making it a practical choice for tight-tolerance turning operations in both production and job-shop environments. The negative rake and negative side clearance geometry maximize insert stability during light to moderate depth-of-cut passes, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm).
Designed for use in VNMG-style toolholders within the KENLOC series. Compatible insert holding methods include clamp and pin. Fits toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle VNMG insert. Suitable for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications across multiple workpiece materials.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered down and all axes at a safe position before changing inserts. Confirm the toolholder clamp and pin are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Torque the clamping screw according to the toolholder manufacturer specification, not this insert alone. Inspect the cutting edge and seating pocket for damage before resuming operation.
