The KENNAMETAL 1528408 is a 54mm indexable insert drill engineered for general-purpose drilling in metal cutting applications. Built on the DFT series platform, it accepts two DFT0905 indexable inserts and delivers a maximum drill depth of 5.35 inches at a 2.5xD depth-to-diameter ratio. The 1.5-inch diameter Weldon Flat and Flange shank provides rigid, repeatable positioning in the spindle. With an overall length of 11.125 inches and a steel body construction, this drill is designed for use in CNC machining centers and manual lathes where consistent hole quality and insert changeability are priorities. Licensed machinists and toolroom professionals are the primary end users.
The 1528408 is suited for production and job-shop drilling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Its 2.5xD ratio makes it well matched to moderate-depth holes where a full indexable-insert drill outperforms solid carbide on cost-per-hole economics. Axial concentric coolant entry keeps the cutting zone clear of chips and controls heat at the insert edge. Both the body side and shank end include NPT coolant ports, allowing integration with through-spindle or externally plumbed coolant systems. This drill is commonly set up by CNC programmers and machinists on horizontal or vertical machining centers running high-volume drilling cycles.
Compatible with DFT drill style inserts, insert style code DFT0905, and insert size 9.92x5.25mm. Insert lock screw is M5-0.8x12.5 T20 drive. Body side coolant hole thread size is 1/8-27 inch; shank end coolant hole thread size is 1/4-18 inch. Designed as an OEM-style toolholder for machining centers using DFT series indexable insert tooling systems.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully powered down and at a complete stop before mounting or removing the drill body. Confirm shank seating and Weldon flat set-screw torque against the machine tool manufacturer specifications before running. Verify coolant port connections are sealed and the system is leak-free before initiating a cutting cycle.
