The KENNAMETAL 1528407 is a steel-body indexable insert drill in the DFT series, designed for general-purpose drilling in metalworking and machining applications. The drill accepts two DFT-style inserts in a right-hand cutting direction and delivers a maximum drill depth of 5 inches (127 mm) at a 2.5xD depth-to-diameter ratio. The body diameter is 50.8 mm with a maximum drill diameter capacity of 57.15 mm (2.25 inches). A 1.5-inch Weldon Flat and Flange shank provides secure toolholder engagement. Coolant-through capability is supported via both axial concentric entry and side coolant ports. Machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments rely on this style of indexable drill for efficient chip evacuation and repeatable hole quality.
This indexable drill is suited for general-purpose drilling operations on machining centers and CNC lathes where rigid toolholding and coolant delivery are required. The DFT series body accepts DFT0905 insert style in size code 0905, making insert changeovers straightforward without removing the holder from the machine. The 2.5xD ratio is well suited for through-holes and blind-hole applications in steel, cast iron, and similar workpiece materials across both prototype and production volumes.
Compatible with DFT drill style toolholders and DFT0905 insert style (insert size code 0905). Insert lock screw is M5-0.8x12.5 T20 drive. Designed for use in standard 1.5-inch straight shank toolholders with Weldon Flat and Flange retention.
Installation and insert changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered down and locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Ensure the shank is fully seated and clamped securely in the toolholder before operation. Verify coolant port connections are clear and delivering adequate flow before initiating a drilling cycle. Follow the insert manufacturer's recommended seating and torque procedure for the M5 T20 insert lock screw.
