The KENNAMETAL 1528403 is a DFT-series indexable insert drill designed for general-purpose drilling in metal cutting applications. It accepts two DFT-style inserts sized 0.3130 by 0.1870 inches (7.94 by 4.75 mm) and is built on a steel body with an overall length of 10 inches. The drill provides a maximum depth of 4.38 inches at a 2.5xD depth-to-diameter ratio, making it well suited for moderate-depth holes where consistent accuracy and insert replaceability are priorities. The 1.5-inch Weldon Flat and Flange shank provides secure, anti-rotation seating in compatible toolholders. Coolant-through capability is included via axial concentric entry, supporting chip evacuation and tool life in production environments. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling specialists are the primary installers and operators of this tool.
This indexable drill is intended for general-purpose drilling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials on CNC machining centers and manual machines capable of accepting a 1.5-inch straight shank. With a maximum drill diameter of 1.875 inches (47.63 mm) and a flute length of 4.38 inches, it covers a range of through-hole and blind-hole applications in job shop and production environments. The DFT series is engineered for applications where insert indexability reduces downtime compared to solid carbide or brazed tooling.
Compatible with DFT drill style toolholders accepting a 1.5-inch straight shank with Weldon Flat and Flange. Takes DFT insert style in size code 0704, with insert designation DFT0704. Verify machine spindle bore and drawbar specifications before mounting.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by qualified machinists following machine tool lockout and energy isolation procedures before handling inserts or adjusting the tool. Use a calibrated T15 Torx driver when seating or replacing insert lock screws to ensure consistent clamping without overloading the screw threads. Confirm coolant line connections at the shank end and body side ports are properly sealed and free of chips before resuming operation. Follow the machine tool manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety standards when setting tool offsets and running first-piece verification cuts.
