The KENNAMETAL 1522242 is a DFT-series indexable insert drill designed for general-purpose drilling in metal cutting applications. It accepts two DFT05T3 indexable inserts and delivers a maximum drill depth of 101.6mm (4 inches) at a 4xD depth-to-diameter ratio. The drill is built from steel with a 1-1/4 inch Weldon Flat and Flange straight shank, making it compatible with standard toolholding setups. Coolant delivery runs axially through a concentric entry port, with a 1/4-18 inch threaded coolant hole at the shank end. Overall length is 8.875 inches. Licensed HVAC technicians, machinists, and toolroom professionals handling production drilling will recognize this as a production-grade indexable drill body suited for consistent hole quality and insert changeability.
This drill is suited for production and general-purpose drilling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The 4xD ratio makes it appropriate for through-holes and blind holes where depth does not exceed four times the nominal diameter. With a nominal drill diameter of 25.4mm and a maximum drill diameter of 28.58mm (1.125 inches), it covers a practical range of bore sizes using a single tool body. The straight shank with Weldon flat allows secure clamping in milling-style toolholders and drill chucks equipped for flat-drive retention.
Compatible with DFT-style indexable inserts in size DFT05T3 with insert dimensions of 5.29mm x 3.75mm (0.208 inches x 0.148 inches). Insert lock screw size is M3-0.5 x 7.2 T9. Designed for use in machine spindles accepting a 1.25 inch straight shank with Weldon flat drive.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Secure the shank fully in a compatible Weldon flat toolholder and verify set-screw torque per the toolholder manufacturer specification before spindle engagement. Connect through-coolant supply to the 1/4-18 inch threaded port at the shank end before operation. Never run the tool at speeds or feeds outside the insert manufacturer recommendations, and inspect both insert seats and the lock screw before each use.
