The KENNAMETAL 1522171 is a DFT-series indexable insert drill designed for general-purpose drilling applications in metal-cutting environments. The body is constructed from steel and accepts two DFT-style inserts, with a maximum drill diameter of 0.85 inches (21.59 mm) and a maximum drill depth of 3 inches (76.20 mm), yielding a 4xD depth-to-diameter ratio. The 1 inch Weldon Flat and flange shank provides rigid, positive-drive retention in compatible tool holders. Coolant is delivered axially through a concentric entry with a 1/4-18 threaded shank-end coolant port, supporting through-coolant capability during deep-hole operations. This drill is intended for installation and use by skilled machining professionals.
The 1522171 is suited for general-purpose through and blind-hole drilling in production machining environments, including job shop and manufacturing floor applications. Its 4xD depth ratio makes it appropriate for moderate-depth bores where indexable-insert tooling is preferred over solid-carbide drills for cost-of-operation reasons. The straight shank with Weldon Flat and flange engagement fits standard toolholder configurations used on CNC machining centers and drill presses with compatible spindle interfaces. Compatible insert style is DFT, insert size code 0303, with an insert lock screw specification of M2.5-0.45x5.9 T8 drive.
Compatible with DFT-style indexable inserts, insert size code 0303, and insert designation DFT0303. Insert lock screw is M2.5-0.45x5.9 T8. The 1 inch straight shank with Weldon Flat and flange is designed for use in toolholders that accept this shank configuration.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before mounting or demounting the drill body. Confirm the toolholder bore and retention method are compatible with the 1 inch Weldon Flat and flange shank before assembly. When replacing inserts, use the specified T8 torx key on the M2.5 lock screw and follow the insert manufacturer seating procedure to ensure proper insert positioning before resuming operation.
