The KENNAMETAL 1517257 is a KSEM-series replaceable-tip drill body designed for deep-hole drilling in metal cutting applications. The body accepts KSEM0688 inserts at Insert Seat Size 1, allowing tip changes without scrapping the holder. Drill diameter range spans 17.46 to 17.96 mm (0.6874 to 0.7071 inches), with a maximum drill depth of 139.7 mm (5.5 inches) and a depth-to-diameter ratio of 8xD. Overall length is 228.6 mm (9 inches). Through-coolant delivery is supported via 1/8-27 NPT ports at both the body side and shank end, keeping cutting temperatures under control at depth. This tool body is installed and serviced by machinists and toolroom technicians in production and job-shop environments.
The 1517257 drill body is suited for deep-hole boring operations where a high depth-to-diameter ratio is required in a single pass. The Weldon flat shank at 19.05 mm diameter seats securely in compatible milling machine spindles, CNC machining centers, and drill presses equipped with Weldon-style holders. The KSEM platform is engineered for interrupted and continuous cuts in ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials where repeatable hole diameter and position are critical. The replaceable-tip design reduces downtime by allowing insert swaps at the machine without removing the body from the spindle.
Compatible with KSEM0688 series replaceable drill tip inserts at Insert Seat Size 1. Designed for use in Weldon flat shank tool holders with a 19.05 mm bore. Specific machine or workpiece material compatibility should be confirmed against KENNAMETAL KSEM series application guidelines.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Before mounting or tip replacement, ensure the spindle is fully de-energized and locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Confirm the Weldon flat shank is fully seated and the set screw is properly engaged in the flat before powering the spindle. Connect the coolant supply lines to the appropriate NPT ports and verify coolant flow before initiating the cut; running this drill body dry at depth can cause premature tip failure and workpiece damage.
