The KENNAMETAL 1517240 is a replaceable-tip drill body designed for deep-hole drilling in metal-cutting applications. Built on the KSEM platform, this drill body accepts KSEM1250 inserts at seat size 8, allowing the cutting tip to be swapped without removing the holder from the machine. The body covers a drill diameter range of 31.75 to 32 mm (1.250 to 1.260 inches) and reaches a maximum drill depth of 254 mm (10.00 inches), representing an 8xD depth-to-diameter ratio. Overall length is 384.18 mm (15.12 inches). Through-coolant capability is standard, delivered via NPT-threaded coolant ports at both the body side and shank end. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production shops are the primary users of this tooling.
This drill body is suited for high-production machining environments where deep, accurate holes in diameters near 31.75 to 32 mm are required. The Weldon flat shank, 31.75 mm in diameter, seats securely in standard Weldon-style toolholders on machining centers and CNC lathes configured for driven tools. The 8xD depth capability makes it appropriate for through-holes and blind bores in structural components, hydraulic blocks, and similar workpieces where repositioning or step drilling would otherwise be required. The replaceable-insert design reduces tooling cost and downtime compared to brazed or solid-carbide alternatives in this diameter class.
Designed for use with KSEM1250 series replaceable cutting inserts at seat size 8. The Weldon flat shank interface is compatible with standard 31.75 mm Weldon-style toolholders used on CNC machining centers and similar machine tools.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in a locked-out, de-energized state per applicable lockout/tagout procedures. Torque the Weldon setscrew against the flat to the toolholder manufacturer specification. Verify coolant port connections are clear and the through-coolant supply is active before initiating a cut, as interrupted coolant flow at 8xD depth can cause rapid insert failure and workpiece damage. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris each time the cutting tip is replaced.
