The KENNAMETAL 1270973 is an indexable boring bar designed for precision internal turning and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the E05MSTLDR128 catalog specification, it features a solid carbide shank paired with a steel head for rigidity and vibration damping in tight-bore applications. The bar accepts TD-series inserts secured by screw clamping, with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees that reduces cutting forces and promotes chip evacuation. A built-in coolant-through channel with a 0.093-inch diameter delivers cutting fluid directly to the insert tip, extending tool life in deep-bore passes. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, and toolroom professionals select this bar for demanding small-bore work where dimensional accuracy is critical.
This boring bar is suited for small-diameter internal machining where a minimum bore diameter of 0.36 inches must be maintained. The 5/16-inch shank diameter and 6-inch overall length allow it to reach bore depths up to 3-1/8 inches, making it appropriate for both production turning and prototype work on steel, cast iron, and similar machinable materials. The right-hand cut orientation is standard for conventional lathe spindle rotation. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators in job shops, production facilities, and tool and die environments.
Designed to accept TD-series indexable inserts with a 0.160-inch inscribed circle and 0.047-inch thickness, as specified for the FCBI toolholder style. Refer to KENNAMETAL tooling catalogs for the full list of qualifying TD-series insert geometries and grades compatible with this bar.
This boring bar is installed and adjusted by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom personnel. Before mounting or changing inserts, de-energize and lock out the machine spindle per applicable shop safety procedures. Secure the shank in a compatible bore bar holder or turret station to the specified minimum engagement length to prevent deflection. Use the correct Torx or hex key driver when tightening the insert clamping screw to avoid stripping the seat; follow insert manufacturer torque guidance printed in the insert datasheet rather than estimating by feel.
