The KENNAMETAL 1183317 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPG431 geometry, part of the KENDEX series. It carries a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN under the KC850 grade designation, which is engineered for moderate wear resistance and toughness across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert measures 22 millimeters (0.866 inches) in length with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a 3/16-inch thickness. The triangular shape provides three usable cutting edges, and the neutral hand orientation suits standard right-hand or left-hand toolholders configured for TPG-style clamping.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron, as well as select special and super alloys. The flat-top chip breaker geometry and positive rake angle support stable chip control at moderate to aggressive material removal rates. It is appropriate for use in production turning centers and manual lathes in industrial, job shop, and maintenance environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers. Maximum depth of cut is 1.25 millimeters (0.049 inches).
Designed as an OEM-specified replacement or direct-use insert for KENNAMETAL KENDEX-series TPG-style toolholders accepting ANSI insert code TPG431 (ISO equivalent TPG220404). Meets ANSI and ISO dimensional standards for the TPG insert family.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench or insert-clamping tool specified for the toolholder model to secure the clamp screw — do not overtighten by hand. Inspect the insert pocket seat and clamping components for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Verify depth-of-cut and feed rate parameters are within the published range for the KC850 grade before resuming operation.
