The KENNAMETAL 1183071 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPG3205 geometry, coated with TiN via a PVD process and assigned manufacturer grade KC730. This insert is designed for external and internal turning operations including facing and boring on CNC and manual lathes. The triangular shape provides three usable cutting edges, and the flat-top chip breaker geometry supports a positive rake angle for reduced cutting forces. With an inscribed circle of 0.375 inches and a corner radius of 0.0079 inches, the insert is suited for light to moderate material removal at shallow depths of cut up to 0.049 inches. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shop and production environments are the primary installers.
This insert is intended for machining steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and superalloys including titanium. The KC730 grade is characterized by high wear resistance to moderate wear resistance and toughness across steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) workpiece material groups, with secondary suitability for superalloys and titanium (S). Typical applications include finish turning and semi-finish turning passes where consistent tool life and edge stability are required. The clamp-style holding method is compatible with standard TPG-style toolholders from the KENNAMETAL KENDEX series.
This insert conforms to ANSI insert code TPG3205 and ISO insert code TPG160302, fitting standard TPG-style clamp toolholders designed for triangular inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. It is part of the KENNAMETAL KENDEX series.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine powered down and in a locked-out state before changing inserts. Seat the insert firmly in the toolholder pocket and verify the clamp torque is consistent with the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the pocket and shim for debris or damage before seating a new insert. Never exceed the maximum recommended depth of cut for the grade and geometry in use.
