The KENNAMETAL 1181990 is a ceramic turning insert in the KENLOC series, manufactured to ANSI insert code CNGA433 and ISO code CNGA120412. It is an uncoated silicon nitride ceramic insert with an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, designed for high-speed machining of cast iron workpieces. The insert features a T-Land cutting edge style, a flat top chip breaker, and a negative rake angle with zero relief angle. With a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a 3/64-inch corner radius, it suits precision turning, facing, and boring operations. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production turning environments where cast iron is the primary workpiece material.
The KENNAMETAL 1181990 is used in turning, facing, and boring applications on cast iron components in both production and job-shop environments. The KY3500 grade delivers high wear resistance to moderate wear resistance and toughness, making it well suited for demanding cast iron machining cycles. It fits KENLOC-style toolholders that accept CNGA-geometry inserts and is held in place by a clamp and pin insert-holding method. This insert is intended for use on CNC lathes and turning centers where consistent tool life and surface finish on cast iron are required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard insert for KENLOC-series toolholders accepting CNGA-geometry inserts. Multi-use application includes turning, facing, and boring operations. Industry standard number CNGA433T0820 confirms fitment in any CNGA433-compatible insert pocket using a clamp and pin holding method.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and all axis motion locked before indexing or replacing inserts. Use appropriate insert seating tools and inspect the pocket seat for chips or debris before seating the insert. Clamp torque should follow the toolholder manufacturer specifications for KENLOC-style clamp and pin systems — do not overtighten, as ceramic inserts are brittle and sensitive to mechanical shock.
