The KENNAMETAL 1181987 is a WNGA433T0820 ceramic turning insert in the KY3500 grade, designed for high-speed machining of cast iron workpieces. Made from silicon nitride ceramic in an uncoated, bright finish, this insert delivers high wear resistance with moderate toughness across a hardness range suited to gray and ductile cast iron. The trigon (W) shape provides an 80-degree included angle and a flat-top chip breaker geometry with a T-Land cutting edge style. With six usable cutting edges and a negative rake angle, this insert maximizes tool life per insert and reduces cost per edge in production turning operations. It is installed and managed by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring applications on cast iron components in both production and job-shop environments. The KENLOC series mount accepts clamp and pin holding methods, and the insert seats in compatible WNGA-style toolholders. The flat-top geometry with negative rake is particularly effective in interrupted or continuous cuts on cast iron where abrasive wear is the primary failure mode. Maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm), making this insert appropriate for finishing and light semi-finishing passes.
Designed for use in WNGA-style toolholders using clamp and pin retention, conforming to ANSI insert code WNGA433 and ISO insert code WNGA080412. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring operations on cast iron workpieces.
This insert is installed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for debris or damage before seating a new edge. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque specifications and verify insert seating before resuming cuts.
