The KENNAMETAL 1163281 is a solid carbide profiling and turning insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision material removal on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the NPR51 insert style with a K313 fine grain carbide grade, this insert features an uncoated WC-Co substrate suited for cutting non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. It carries a negative rake angle of 10 degrees and a 55-degree included angle, producing a parallelogram shape with four usable cutting edges. The corner radius measures 0.0156 inches (0.40 mm), and the maximum depth of cut reaches 0.1256 inches. Installation uses a screw-holding method, making indexing straightforward on compatible Top Notch toolholders.
This insert is applied in profiling and turning operations where tight contour control is required. The fine grain K313 carbide grade is well suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes on non-ferrous workpiece materials including aluminum alloys and copper, as well as superalloys and titanium where edge sharpness and wear resistance are critical. The uncoated WC-Co finish maintains a sharp cutting edge with minimal built-up edge risk on gummy materials. It is typically installed by machinists and CNC tool-setup technicians in production turning environments requiring repeatable insert geometry.
Designed for use with Top Notch series toolholders accepting the NPR51 insert style. Compatible workpiece materials include non-ferrous metals (material code N) and superalloys and titanium (material code S) as specified by the manufacturer.
This insert is installed and indexed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and de-energize the machine tool before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the manufacturer-specified torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder specification — do not overtighten, as this can chip the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket for wear or debris before seating a new edge.
