The KENNAMETAL 1163230 is a solid carbide profiling and turning insert in the NPGR51 style, designed for precision material removal on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It carries the KC730 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied TiN coating, delivering wear resistance suited to interrupted and continuous cuts in demanding workpiece materials. The insert features a positive rake angle of 10 degrees, an 8-degree relief angle, and a 0.0156 inch (0.40 mm) corner radius. With 2 cutting edges and a parallelogram shape, it is a right-hand insert held in place by a clamp-style toolholder. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators are the primary installers.
This insert is rated for profiling and turning applications across P, M, and S workpiece material codes, covering steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium grades. It fits into the Top Notch series toolholding system. The 55-degree included angle and 3/8 inch insert length make it well suited to contour turning, chamfering, and form profiling operations on CNC or manual lathes in both production and job-shop environments. The common chipbreaker geometry supports chip control across a range of feeds and depths of cut up to 0.1250 inch.
Designed for use in Top Notch series clamp-style toolholders accepting NPGR51R inserts. ISO equivalent designation is KCGR110304R08. Compatible toolholder and insert system standards: NPGR51R and KCGR110304R08.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a full stop, lockout/tagout state. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamping hardware specified for the Top Notch toolholder to secure the insert — do not overtighten or use improvised clamping methods. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for chips or debris before seating a new insert. Confirm correct hand orientation (right-hand) before beginning a cut.
