Product Description

The KENNAMETAL 1163038 is a solid carbide, uncoated turning insert in the TP42 series, designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the K68 grade, this insert delivers high wear resistance with moderate toughness, making it well suited for interrupted and continuous cuts in stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, and other non-ferrous materials. The triangular insert geometry (60-degree included angle) provides three usable cutting edges. With a neutral hand orientation and a screw-on holding method, it seats securely in compatible TP-style toolholders without additional clamping hardware.

This insert is used in turning, facing, and light profiling operations across aerospace, general machining, and production shop environments. The positive rake and positive side clearance geometry reduce cutting forces, which helps control heat buildup and extends tool life when machining gummy or abrasive workpiece materials. The 0.03125-inch corner radius suits moderate finishing and semi-finishing passes. No chip breaker is present, so it is best applied where chip management is handled through feed, speed, and coolant selection rather than insert geometry alone.

Key Features

  • K68 solid carbide grade: high wear resistance to moderate toughness, rated for stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), aluminum and non-ferrous (N), and superalloys (S)
  • Triangular insert shape with 60-degree included angle provides three cutting edges per insert
  • Uncoated bright finish maintains sharp edge geometry without coating buildup — preferred for non-ferrous and sticky alloys
  • Positive rake and positive side clearance reduce cutting forces and heat generation
  • Screw-on mounting method provides rigid, repeatable seating in TP-style toolholders
  • No chip breaker design allows direct control of chip formation through cutting parameters

Compatibility

Designed for use in screw-on TP-style turning toolholders. ANSI insert code TP42, ISO insert code TP1100208, industry standard number TCMT3252MF. Compatible workpiece material codes: P, M, K, N, S.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and tighten the mounting screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not over-torque the screw, as this can crack the carbide insert or damage the pocket. Inspect the insert pocket and screw threads for chips or debris before seating a new insert.
