The KENNAMETAL 1163030 is a solid carbide, uncoated round turning insert designed for general turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Conforming to ANSI insert code RD8 and ISO code RD, this neutral-hand insert features a full-radius round shape (Shape Code R) with a 0.5 inch inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.2656 inches. The K68 grade delivers high wear resistance balanced with toughness, making it well suited for interrupted cuts and variable stock conditions. Holding method is screw-on, and the positive side clearance geometry reduces cutting forces on the workpiece. Licensed HVAC and machining professionals recognize this insert class as a workhorse for roughing through medium machining passes.
The 1163030 is intended for turning applications involving stainless steel (ISO M), cast iron (ISO K), aluminum and non-ferrous alloys (ISO N), as well as ISO P and ISO S workpiece materials. Its chip breaker designation P supports roughing and medium machining operations where chip control and edge durability are the primary concerns. The maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm), keeping the insert within its rated envelope during aggressive material removal. Designed as an OEM-style replacement turning insert for screw-on style round insert toolholders accepting an RD8 ANSI-coded insert with a 0.5 inch inscribed circle. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and screw hole diameter of 0.125 inches before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians following the machine tool manufacturer's toolholder torque and clamping guidelines. Power down and lock out the spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surface for chips or damage before seating the insert, as debris under the insert will cause premature edge failure or dimensional error. Dispose of worn carbide inserts per applicable shop hazardous-material procedures.
