The KENNAMETAL 1162896 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CPGM21.50 geometry with a KC730 grade and PVD-applied TiN coating. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and an 11-degree relief angle, giving it a positive side clearance suited for clean, efficient cuts. The insert measures 6.45 mm (0.2539 inches) in length with a 1/4-inch (0.2500-inch) inscribed circle and a 0.0039-inch corner radius. It is designed for screw-on holding with two usable cutting edges and is rated for medium machining chip-breaker operation. Licensed machinists and CNC turning technicians install this insert in appropriate tool holders for precision metal removal.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces, and it also carries secondary ratings for superalloys and titanium. The KC730 grade delivers high to moderate wear resistance with adequate toughness across P, M, and K workpiece material classifications. It is a multi-use insert well suited to both production turning environments and job-shop applications where one insert geometry must cover a range of materials. Designed for use in screw-on style CPGM-compatible turning tool holders conforming to ANSI insert code CPGM21502 and ISO insert code CPGM060201. Verify holder geometry, clamp style, and pocket dimensions before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Use the correct torque driver for the screw-on clamp screw - refer to the tool holder manufacturer specifications for torque values. Inspect the insert pocket for wear or debris before seating the insert, and confirm the insert is fully seated before resuming cuts.
