The KENNAMETAL 1161987 is a round carbide turning insert in the RCMT325 geometry, coated with TiN via a PVD process and rated in the KC730 grade. It carries a 3/8-inch inscribed circle (0.375 inches), a 5/32-inch insert thickness (0.1563 inches), and a 3/16-inch corner radius (0.1875 inches). The round shape provides a full radius cutting edge with four available cutting edges per insert. The screw-on holding method and positive rake geometry make it a practical choice for machinists running steel, stainless steel, and cast iron applications at medium machining parameters. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Its KC730 grade targets steel (P-class), stainless steel (M-class), and cast iron (K-class) workpieces, delivering high wear-resistance to moderate wear-resistance and toughness across those material families. Superalloys and titanium are listed as secondary workpiece materials. The honed cutting edge style and medium chip breaker design support stable cuts in production and job-shop environments where consistent tool life is required across mixed material runs.
Designed for use in screw-on RCMT-style toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle round insert. Conforms to ANSI insert code RCMT32.5 and ISO insert code RCMT097300. Compatible with toolholders meeting ANSI and ISO standards for this insert geometry and size code.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing any insert. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and tighten the retaining screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the cutting edge and pocket for chips or debris before each insert index to maintain proper seating and dimensional accuracy.
