The KENNAMETAL 1161973 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT330.5LF KC730 grade, designed for precision metal cutting in CNC turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle and positive side clearance, making it well suited for finishing and light machining passes. It carries a PVD-applied TiN coating and a honed cutting edge for consistent performance on steel, stainless steel, and superalloys. The screw-on holding method and neutral hand orientation allow straightforward fitment in standard VBMT-compatible toolholders.
This insert is intended for use in production and job-shop turning applications where surface finish and tool life on difficult materials are priorities. The LF chip breaker geometry targets finishing and light machining cuts, controlling chip formation at shallow depths of cut up to 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). The KC730 grade delivers high to moderate wear resistance combined with adequate toughness, making it appropriate for steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) workpiece materials. Licensed machinists and CNC setup technicians will find this insert applicable across a broad range of turning scenarios where insert longevity and dimensional accuracy are critical.
Designed as a screw-on replacement insert conforming to ANSI insert code VBMT3305 and ISO insert code VBMT160402. Compatible with toolholders designed to accept VBMT-style screw-on inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine powered down and the spindle locked before insert exchange. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified method — do not overtighten, as this can crack the insert or damage the toolholder pocket. Inspect the toolholder seat and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating the new insert. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and toolholder OEM guidelines when setting tool offsets after insert change.
