The KENNAMETAL 1161972 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT222LF configuration, coated with TiN via a PVD process and graded KC730. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape with a neutral hand orientation, making it suitable for a range of finishing and light machining operations. The insert carries a 0.25-inch inscribed circle, a corner radius of 0.0313 inches, and an insert length of 0.8718 inches. With a positive rake angle and honed cutting edge style, the KC730 grade is engineered for high to moderate wear resistance across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpiece materials. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shop and production environments are the primary users.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The LF chip breaker geometry targets finishing and light machining passes where tight tolerances and fine surface finishes are required. The screw-on holding method secures the insert in compatible VBMT-style toolholders. With two cutting edges per insert, it offers a cost-effective approach to high-volume or precision turning applications where consistent edge performance is critical.
Designed for use in VBMT-style screw-on toolholders conforming to ANSI insert code VBMT222 and ISO insert code VBMT110308. Suitable for multi-use turning applications including turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque driver for the screw-on clamp to avoid insert movement or seat damage — refer to the toolholder manufacturer torque specification, not estimated hand feel. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating a new insert edge.
