The KENNAMETAL 1161971 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT220.5LF configuration, coated with titanium nitride (TiN) via a PVD process. It carries the KC730 manufacturer grade, which is engineered for high to moderate wear resistance across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpiece materials. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, a 0.2500-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0079-inch corner radius. The LF chip breaker geometry targets finishing and light machining operations. Mounting is via screw-on method, with positive rake and positive side clearance supporting clean, controlled chip formation in demanding turning applications.
This insert is suited for external and internal turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring on CNC lathes and turning centers. Its KC730 grade and TiN PVD coating make it particularly effective when machining steel (P-class), stainless steel (M-class), and cast iron (K-class) materials. Secondary suitability extends to superalloys and titanium (S-class). The finishing-oriented LF chip breaker is appropriate for final-pass and close-tolerance work where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are priorities. Two cutting edges are available per insert.
Designed for use in VBMT-style screw-on toolholders. Conforms to ANSI insert code VBMT2205 and ISO insert code VBMT110302. Compatible with toolholders accepting a 0.2500-inch inscribed circle, 0.1250-inch thick, 35-degree diamond insert with a B clearance code and M tolerance code.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician on a CNC or manual lathe with the machine powered down and the spindle locked before index or insert change. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and torque the clamping screw according to the toolholder manufacturer specification before returning to cutting conditions. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before each insert change to maintain positional accuracy. Dispose of worn inserts per applicable facility and local regulations for carbide tooling.
