The KENNAMETAL 1161958 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPMT style, designed for precision metal removal in turning, facing, and boring operations. Identified by the industry code TPMT21.51LF, this insert carries the KC730 grade designation and features a physical vapor deposition (PVD) TiN coating for high wear resistance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert has a 60-degree triangle shape with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, an 11-degree relief angle, and a honed cutting edge. With a 1/4-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, it is optimized for finishing and light machining passes. The screw-on holding method provides secure seating in compatible toolholders, and three available cutting edges extend tool life per insert.
This insert is suited for finishing and light machining of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium in both turning and boring applications. The KC730 grade delivers high to moderate wear resistance and toughness, making it a practical choice for shop environments running mixed material jobs. Typical use cases include CNC lathe operations on P-, M-, and K-class workpiece materials where consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required. The LF chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip evacuation at lighter depths of cut, reducing the risk of chip recutting and workpiece damage on finishing passes.
Designed for use in TPMT-style screw-on toolholders conforming to ANSI insert code TPMT2151 and ISO insert code TPMT110204. Compatible with turning, facing, and boring applications on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards for interchangeability with holders designed for this insert form factor.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the screw-on fastener; do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide body. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before placing a new insert, as contamination can cause premature edge failure or dimensional shift.
