The KENNAMETAL 1160285 is a TNMG432K KC850 grade solid carbide turning insert designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. It carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN, which delivers a balance of moderate wear resistance and toughness across a range of workpiece materials. The insert features a triangular shape with a 60-degree included angle, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0312-inch corner radius. Neutral hand orientation makes it suitable for both right-hand and left-hand toolholders configured for TNMG-style inserts. Licensed HVAC techs and machinists in production and job-shop environments rely on this insert for consistent chip control using the K chip breaker geometry.
The 1160285 is suited for turning steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and select superalloys in moderate to high material removal applications. The KC850 grade is characterized as offering moderate wear resistance combined with toughness, making it a versatile choice when surface finish and tool life must be balanced against interrupted cuts or variable stock conditions. It is appropriate for residential and commercial machine shops, production turning cells, and maintenance repair operations where KENLOC-series tooling systems are already in use.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard production insert for KENLOC-series toolholders accepting TNMG-style inserts. ANSI insert code TNMG432 and ISO insert code TNMG220408 identify compatible toolholder pockets. Rated for primary workpiece material codes P (steel), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), and S (superalloys), with secondary compatibility codes K and M. Material grades C5 and C6 apply.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert firmly into the TNMG pocket and torque the clamp or tighten the center pin according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for chips or debris before securing to ensure proper contact and prevent insert movement during the cut.
