The KENNAMETAL 1114356 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the NGP3125 insert style in the Top Notch series, it carries a KC730 grade with a PVD-applied TiN finish that improves wear resistance and extends tool life on ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The left-hand cutting orientation suits specific toolholder setups where a conventional right-hand insert cannot reach the workpiece geometry. With a 3.18 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.81 mm, it handles light to moderate grooving passes with controlled chip formation. The positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a 55-degree included angle support cleaner cutting action at the groove entry and exit.
This insert is intended for machining centers and manual lathes in job shop, production, and maintenance-repair environments. It is well suited for cutting grooves in steel, cast iron, and similar materials classified under C2, C3, and C4 material grades. The Top Notch series tooling system is a common platform in production turning cells where quick insert indexing and repeatable seating are priorities. Machinists and CNC operators handling medium-volume grooving work on shaft diameters, retaining ring grooves, and undercuts will find this insert appropriate for those applications.
Designed for use with Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept the NGP-style insert seat in size 3125. Compatible with C2, C3, and C4 material grade workpieces as designated in the supplier specifications.
Installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine in a full stop, locked-out, and energy-isolated state before touching the insert or toolholder. Use the correct torque wrench and clamping hardware specified for the Top Notch toolholder to seat the insert properly - do not over-tighten the clamp screw by hand estimation alone. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for chips or debris before loading the new insert, as contamination can cause seating errors that lead to premature edge failure or dimensional inaccuracy. Verify insert hand orientation matches the toolholder designation before beginning a cutting program.
