The KENNAMETAL 1097266 is a left-hand external indexable threading toolholder built for precision thread-cutting and grooving operations on a lathe. Part of the Top Notch series, it features a 1 x 1 inch square shank and an overall length of 6 inches, making it a compact and rigid platform for insert-based cutting work. The NS-style toolholder accepts N.4L inserts secured by a clamp-style holding method, delivering consistent insert positioning and reliable cutting performance across threading and grooving applications. Designed for professional machinists and toolroom technicians, this holder is suited for high-repetition production turning environments where insert changeability and runout consistency matter.
This toolholder is used in external threading and grooving operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. The left-hand orientation makes it the correct choice for right-to-left cutting passes or setups where workpiece geometry or turret configuration requires it. With a maximum depth of cut of 0.294 inches and a head length of 1.38 inches, it handles a practical range of thread profiles and groove depths. The back-of-bar to cutting edge dimension is 1.25 inches, and the center to cutting edge measurement is 0.54 inches, supporting accurate tool offset entry during setup.
Designed for use with N.4L series Top Notch indexable inserts. Confirm insert geometry and grade selection against the specific thread form and workpiece material before ordering inserts separately.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the lathe or turning center is fully powered down and the spindle is locked before seating or removing the toolholder. Secure the shank in a qualified tool block or turret station rated for the 1 x 1 inch shank cross-section, following the machine tool manufacturer torque guidelines for clamping fasteners. Verify tool offset values in the CNC control after installation before initiating a cutting pass.
