The KENNAMETAL 1017294 is an indexable shim designed for use in boring bar toolholders. It provides a precise seating surface for triangle-profile indexable inserts, maintaining correct cutting geometry and protecting the toolholder pocket from damage during machining operations. The shim features an ITSN style with a negative rake orientation and measures 0.625 inches inscribed circle with a thickness of 3/16 inches. Machinists and CNC tooling technicians install this shim as part of a complete indexable boring bar assembly in production turning and boring applications.
This shim is suited for boring bar setups requiring a triangle insert with a 5/8 inch (0.6250 inch decimal) inscribed circle. It is commonly used in precision inner-diameter boring operations on lathes and machining centers in both job shop and production environments. The negative rake geometry supports stable cutting action in demanding applications. Installation is performed by qualified machining personnel as part of standard indexable toolholder maintenance or initial assembly.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement shim for boring bar toolholders accepting ITSN-style shims with a 5/8 inch inscribed circle triangle insert.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician during boring bar assembly or insert change procedures. Ensure the toolholder is removed from the machine spindle and all moving parts are at a full stop before servicing. The shim must be seated flush and clean in the pocket before torquing the insert clamp screw to the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the shim for cracks or deformation at each insert index.
