The JACOBS 31414 is a keyless drill chuck designed for use on drill presses, milling machines, and other machine tools equipped with a No. 3 Morse Taper spindle. It accepts round-shank tooling from 7/64 inch (0.0118 inch) up to 5/8 inch (0.6300 inch), making it suitable for a wide range of drilling and light boring operations. The integral taper shank mounts directly into a 3MT spindle without a separate arbor. Ball bearing construction supports smooth, low-friction tightening and consistent grip. The chuck carries a Total Indicator Runout (TIR) rating of 0.0016 inch, providing the concentricity required for accurate hole location in production and maintenance settings.
This chuck is appropriate for light industrial and job-shop applications where a reliable, quick-change drilling tool is needed on a 3MT-equipped machine. The keyless design allows bit changes without a chuck key, which reduces setup time during repetitive drilling operations. The steel construction handles the demands of intermittent production use. It is suited for installation by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool room professionals working on drill presses, lathes used for drilling, or milling machine quills fitted with a 3MT taper. Maximum rated speed is 4000 RPM.
Designed as a direct-mount replacement for keyless drill chucks on machine tools with a No. 3 Morse Taper (3MT) spindle, including drill presses, drill-press heads, and milling machine quills configured for 3MT tooling.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians. Before mounting, power down and lock out the machine per applicable OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Clean the 3MT spindle bore and the chuck shank thoroughly to remove chips, oil, and debris before seating the taper - any contamination will cause misalignment and elevated runout. Drive the taper firmly into the spindle with a soft mallet or drawbar as the machine design requires; never strike the chuck body directly. To remove, use the correct drift through the spindle's drift slot rather than attempting to pry or hammer the sleeve.
