The ISCAR 6405228 is a solid carbide double-ended grooving insert in the Cut-Grip series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries ISCAR grade IC8250 with an Al2O3 PVD coating, delivering hardness and wear resistance suited for interrupted cuts and abrasive workpiece materials. The cutting width is 4.23 mm (0.1665 inches), the maximum depth of cut is 13.00 mm (0.5120 inches), and the corner radius is 0.10 mm (0.0040 inches). The P chip breaker geometry and 7-degree positive rake angle promote controlled chip formation and reduced cutting forces. Installation is performed by licensed machinists and toolroom technicians working with clamp-style grooving toolholders.
This insert is intended for grooving and cut-off work on stainless steel and carbon steel workpieces in both production and job-shop turning environments. The neutral hand orientation and double-ended design make it adaptable to a range of toolholder configurations. The IC8250 grade is well matched to applications requiring consistent edge life across stainless steel grades and general steel alloys. Overall insert length is 15.30 mm (0.6024 inches), keeping the profile compact within standard Cut-Grip toolholder pockets.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series clamp-style grooving toolholders that accept GIP-style inserts with size code 423010. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel (ISO material code M) and steel (ISO material code P). Conforms to ISO 13399 tooling data standards.
Installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered off and the spindle locked. Use the appropriate ISCAR clamp key to seat and secure the insert fully before resuming operation. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or wear before seating a new insert, as debris in the pocket can cause premature edge failure or poor surface finish. Follow the machine tool builder and toolholder manufacturer torque and clamping procedures for the specific Cut-Grip toolholder in use.
