The ISCAR 6405147 is a solid carbide grooving insert carrying the GIMY635318FY designation and IC830 manufacturer grade. It is engineered for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features an AlTiN and TiN dual-layer PVD coating that extends cutting-edge life under high heat and abrasion. With a 6.35 mm (0.2500 inch) cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 3.10 mm (0.1220 inch), and a full-radius corner profile of 3.18 mm (0.1250 inch) radius, this insert is sized for medium-width groove applications. It uses a positive 7-degree rake angle and the FY chip breaker geometry to support controlled chip evacuation. Installation is by clamp-style insert holding. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary users.
This insert is a single-end, neutral-hand design suited for grooving superalloys and titanium as its primary workpiece materials, aligning with ISO material groups M, P, and S. It fits into the Cut-Grip series toolholding system, which is a common clamping platform used in production turning environments. Typical applications include groove turning, undercut machining, and plunge parting on precision components found in aerospace, medical, and general metalworking. Because of its IC830 grade and PVD coating, it performs well where thermal stability and edge retention are priorities on difficult-to-machine materials.
Designed for use with Cut-Grip series clamping toolholders that accept GIMY-style inserts. Specific compatible toolholder models should be confirmed using the ISCAR Cut-Grip product catalog and the GIMY 635-318 insert size designation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Before changing inserts, power down the machine spindle and engage the axis locks per standard machine lockout-tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully in the toolholder pocket and verify clamp torque is applied per the toolholder manufacturer specification before running the machine. Inspect the insert seating surface and clamp screw condition at each insert change to prevent insert movement during cutting.
