The ISCAR 6405117 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the GIP318159P geometry with ISCAR grade IC808, this double-ended insert features a PVD-applied AlTiN, TiAlN, and TiN multilayer coating that supports high cutting speeds and extended tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The cutting width measures 3.18 mm (0.125 inches) and the maximum depth of cut reaches 12.19 mm (0.480 inches), making it suitable for moderate to deep grooving passes. A positive rake angle of 7 degrees and the self-grip holding method provide stable clamping within compatible Cut-Grip toolholders. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install and index this insert as a direct replacement in production turning environments.
This insert is rated for universal primary workpiece material compatibility, covering ISO material groups P (steel), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), H (hardened materials), and S (superalloys and titanium). The Cut-Grip series design suits high-volume production grooving where consistent chip control and edge integrity are critical. The chip breaker style is P, optimized for controlled chip formation at positive rake geometries. Both ends of the insert are usable, reducing per-edge tooling cost in applications where the insert can be indexed without interference.
Designed for use in ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders and grooving systems that accept the GIP 3.18-1.59 insert geometry. Compatible with ISO material groups P, M, K, H, and S as indicated by the manufacturer. Verify toolholder pocket specifications before installation.
Insert indexing and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a full stop, spindle locked, and all motion axes disabled per shop lockout-tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torque wrench or clamp screw driver specified for the Cut-Grip toolholder to seat the insert fully in the pocket without overtightening. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping surfaces for debris or wear before seating a new insert. Do not attempt to regrind or reshape carbide inserts in the field.
