The ISCAR 6404319 is a solid carbide double-ended grooving insert in the Cut-Grip series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the IC8250 grade with a CVD-applied Al2O3 coating, which delivers thermal resistance and edge stability during continuous and interrupted cuts. The insert has a 6.35 mm (0.2500 inch) cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 3.80 mm (0.1496 inch), and a corner radius of 0.80 mm (0.0315 inch). The neutral hand orientation and positive 7-degree rake angle reduce cutting forces on difficult materials. Licensed machinists and CNC tool setters are the primary installers of this insert style.
This insert is suited for grooving and parting applications on stainless steel and carbon or alloy steel workpieces. The Al2O3 CVD coating and IC8250 substrate are matched to the thermal and abrasive demands of ISO material groups M (stainless steel) and P (steel). Typical install scenarios include production turning cells running tight-tolerance grooves where consistent chip control and edge life are critical. The double-ended design provides two usable cutting edges per insert, reducing per-edge tooling cost in high-volume operations. The E-style chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip formation across the rated depth-of-cut range of 3.00 mm to 4.00 mm.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for Cut-Grip series grooving toolholders accepting GIP-style inserts with size code 635E080. Verify toolholder seat dimensions before installation.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct torque tool for the clamping screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer - do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide insert. Inspect the toolholder seat for chips or debris before seating the insert to ensure full and even contact.
