The ISCAR 6402274 is a solid carbide grooving insert from the Cut-Grip series, designed for precision grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the GIM3J8A designation with ISCAR grade IC354, a PVD-applied TiCN coating that improves wear resistance and surface finish on difficult-to-machine workpiece materials. The insert features a neutral hand orientation and a 0.1181 inch (3.00 mm) cutting width, making it well-suited for consistent groove dimensions in production environments. A licensed machinist or CNC setup technician installs and indexes this insert as part of a Cut-Grip toolholder system.
This insert is intended for grooving stainless steel and steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material classifications M and P. The IC354 grade with TiCN PVD coating is particularly effective in applications requiring extended tool life on austenitic stainless steels and carbon or alloy steels. It is a single-ended insert with a positive rake geometry (7-degree rake angle, 8-degree lead angle) and a chip breaker style A, suited for controlled chip formation in finish and semi-finish grooving cuts. Typical use is in medium-to-high production turning operations where repeatable groove width and wall finish are critical.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders and grooving systems that accept the GIM 3J insert style. Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing any insert. Use the appropriate ISCAR torx or clamping key for the Cut-Grip seat to avoid over-torquing the clamping screw. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper support and cutting-edge registration.
