The ISCAR 6401882 is a solid carbide grooving insert carrying the GDMY840Y geometry and IC220 grade designation. It is built for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features an 8 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 4 mm, and a neutral hand orientation, making it interchangeable in symmetrical Cut-Grip toolholders. A PVD-applied TiCN plus TiN multilayer coating delivers wear resistance and a low-friction surface that extends tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The double-ended design provides two usable cutting edges per insert, reducing cost per edge for high-volume turning shops.
This insert is suited for grooving, profiling, and parting applications on materials classified under ISO workpiece codes K, M, N, and S, covering cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous alloys, and heat-resistant superalloys. The Y chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip formation at positive rake angles, which is particularly useful when machining gummy or stringy materials. It fits within ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders designed for the 840 insert size and is appropriate for both production turning and job-shop environments where a single insert grade must handle varied material types.
Designed for use in ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders accepting the 840 insert size. Compatible with ISO workpiece material groups K, M, N, and S as indicated by manufacturer classification. Conforms to ISO 13399 tooling data standards.
Installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a full stop, locked-out condition before any insert change. Seat the insert fully in the toolholder pocket and verify clamping torque matches the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming cutting. Inspect the pocket and clamping screw for debris or damage each time the insert is indexed. Follow the machine tool builder and toolholder manufacturer guidelines for approach angle and overhang limits to avoid chatter or premature edge failure.
