The ISCAR 6401779 is a solid carbide grooving insert carrying grade designation IC428 and insert style GIP, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It delivers a 5 mm cutting width with a maximum depth of cut of 3 mm, a 0.80 mm corner radius, and a positive rake angle of 7 degrees. The CVD-applied Al2O3 and TiC coating provides thermal resistance and wear protection suited to interrupted cuts and continuous turning across a range of workpiece materials. Machinists and toolroom technicians specify this insert for precision groove geometry where consistent width tolerance is critical.
This insert is rated for primary use on cast iron, hard materials, and steel, covering ISO material codes H, K, and P. It fits the Cut-Grip series toolholding system and is oriented neutral, making it compatible with both left-hand and right-hand cut setups depending on toolholder configuration. Typical applications include snap-ring grooves, undercuts, and parting operations in medium to high-volume production turning environments. The double-end configuration extends usable insert life before replacement.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders accepting GIP-style inserts with insert size code 500E080. Compatible with turning applications on cast iron, hard materials, and steel workpieces per ISO material codes H, K, and P.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine spindle fully stopped and the toolholder secured in the turret. Use the appropriate ISCAR torx or hex key specified for the Cut-Grip clamping screw to achieve proper insert retention without over-torquing the pocket seat. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination affects insert stability and groove width accuracy. Disposal of worn carbide inserts should follow applicable shop or municipal guidelines for metal waste.
