The ISCAR 5903408 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for cutting internal NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads at 8 threads per inch (TPI). Built to the IC808 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied TiN/TiAlN coating, it delivers reliable wear resistance and edge retention across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert features a 3/8 inch (0.375 inch decimal) inscribed circle and measures 0.143 inches thick. Right-hand orientation makes it the standard choice for conventional internal threading operations. Machinists and toolroom operators working with CNC lathes and threading toolholders in production or job-shop environments will find this insert a direct fit for ISCARTHREAD-series tooling.
This insert is suited for internal NPT pipe thread applications in turning centers and CNC lathes. NPT threading is common in fluid and gas piping system fabrication, where tapered thread profiles ensure pressure-tight connections without additional sealant reliance. The IC808 submicron carbide grade with PVD coating is rated for universal primary workpiece material compatibility, covering steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys. It is used in both production and maintenance-repair machining contexts where pipe fittings, manifolds, and threaded bores are generated from solid material.
Designed for use with ISCARTHREAD-series internal threading toolholders that accept the 16IRM insert style with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and insert style designation before installation.
Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert without overtightening. Confirm thread form, TPI, and hand orientation match the workpiece drawing requirements before initiating the threading cycle.
