The ISCAR 5902230 is a laydown-style threading insert engineered for internal trapezoidal thread cutting. Built from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert carries the IC908 manufacturer grade, which is suited for demanding threading operations across a wide range of workpiece materials. It features a 3/8-inch (0.375-inch decimal) inscribed circle and a nominal thickness of 0.143 inches. The right-hand cutting geometry targets internal Tr (trapezoidal) threads at a 3 mm pitch. This insert is sized under the 16IR designation and belongs to the ISCARTHREAD series. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators running turning centers or manual lathes equipped with compatible laydown threading toolholders.
This insert is suited for internal trapezoidal threading applications on a broad spectrum of workpiece materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous alloys, high-temperature alloys, and hardened materials, as reflected by the multi-material workpiece codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Trapezoidal thread forms are common in lead screws, power transmission components, and precision linear actuator assemblies. The IC908 grade and PVD coating provide wear resistance and edge stability when threading these profiles at production volumes.
Designed for use with ISCARTHREAD series 16IR laydown threading toolholders that accept solid carbide inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Specific toolholder compatibility should be confirmed against ISCAR toolholder documentation for the 16IR pocket size.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine fully stopped and locked out per applicable safety procedures. Use the correct torque screwdriver or clamping key specified for the toolholder to seat the insert properly without cracking the carbide. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamping screw for wear or contamination before seating a new insert. Do not use this insert for external thread profiles or thread standards other than those specified by the manufacturer.
