The ISCAR 5901977 is a laydown threading insert designed for external API thread-form cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built from solid carbide with a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, this insert carries the IC908 manufacturer grade, which is engineered for high cutting performance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert produces right-hand external threads at 5 threads per inch (TPI) to the API standard, making it a direct-fit tooling choice for oil-field and pipe-fitting thread applications. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for external API threading operations on pipe, couplings, and related components typically found in oil-country tubular goods (OCTG) machining. The 22ER style and 1/2-inch inscribed circle size fit standard laydown threading toolholders designed for that insert geometry. The IC908 grade handles a universal range of workpiece materials, including steel, stainless, cast iron, non-ferrous alloys, and high-temperature alloys, as reflected by the primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S per ISO 13399 classification.
Designed for use in laydown threading toolholders accepting the 22ER insert style with a 1/2-inch inscribed circle. Consult your toolholder manufacturer specifications to confirm pocket geometry and clamping compatibility before installation.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's torque and clamping guidelines. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or wear before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and repeatability. Use the correct insert key or clamping screw driver to avoid damaging the clamping mechanism.
