The ISCAR 5901580 is a laydown-style solid carbide threading insert designed for right-hand internal UN thread cutting at 16 threads per inch (TPI). Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process under the IC908 manufacturer grade, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability in demanding threading operations. It carries a 3/8-inch (0.375 inch decimal) inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.143 inches. The IC908 grade is suited to a broad range of workpiece materials including steels, stainless, cast iron, nonferrous alloys, and high-temperature alloys. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers of this insert type.
This insert is intended for internal UN thread-form operations in turning centers and CNC lathes equipped with compatible 16IR-style toolholders. Its universal primary workpiece material rating makes it applicable across production and job-shop environments handling carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, nonferrous, and superalloy workpieces. The M chipbreaker designation is suited to medium cutting conditions. Typical applications include threading bores, nuts, fittings, and similar internally threaded components in both high-volume production and maintenance machining contexts.
Designed for use in 16IR-series laydown threading toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Compatible workpiece material codes per input data include H, K, M, N, P, and S classifications covering cast iron, nonferrous, stainless, general steel, carbon steel, and high-temperature alloy families.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked. Use the toolholder manufacturer's specified torx or hex key to achieve proper clamp torque without over-tightening, which can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for chips or debris before seating the insert. Always index or replace the insert before chipping propagates to the toolholder pocket.
