The ISCAR 5566980 is a VNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for precision external and internal turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. Built from solid carbide with a CVD-applied TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN multilayer coating, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. It carries the IC6015 manufacturer grade and belongs to the Isoturn series. The 35-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code V) provides a sharp, low-cutting-force geometry suited to finishing and semi-finishing work. The insert measures 0.488 inches in length with a 5/16-inch (0.3125 inch) inscribed circle and a 0.008-inch corner radius. Double-ended construction maximizes index count per insert.
This insert is engineered primarily for machining stainless steel (ISO material code M), where edge toughness and coating adhesion are critical to consistent tool life. The NF chip breaker geometry supports positive rake cutting, promoting controlled chip formation at moderate to light depths of cut. Maximum depth of cut reaches 2.49 mm (0.098 inches). Typical applications include shaft turning, facing, and contouring on austenitic and martensitic stainless alloys in production machining environments. The Isoturn series is a standard ISCAR platform used in high-volume turning cells across aerospace, medical, and general manufacturing shops.
Designed for use with VNMG-style toolholders accepting a 5/16-inch inscribed circle insert. Tolerance code M and clearance code N (VNMG designation) are standard across a wide range of external turning and boring toolholder bodies. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and clamping style before installation.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians using a torque wrench and appropriate clamp or pin-lock hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is locked before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the pocket and verify there is no rock before engaging the clamp. Do not use damaged pockets or worn clamp screws, as improper seating will cause premature edge failure and dimensional deviation in the workpiece.
