The ISCAR 5550505 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision finishing operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying the ANSI designation VNMG331NF and ISO equivalent VNMG160404, this insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a negative side clearance and a PVD-applied TiAlN coating. The IC807 grade delivers high wear resistance while maintaining moderate toughness, making it well suited to continuous and semi-interrupted cuts on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and superalloys. The NF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing passes, producing controlled chip formation at light-to-moderate depths of cut.
This insert is intended for finishing applications in general metalworking and precision machining environments. It is typically installed in VNMG-style external turning toolholders using a clamp and pin holding method. Applicable workpiece material codes are P (steel), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), and S (special and superalloy materials). The Isoturn series designation indicates compatibility with ISCAR Isoturn toolholder families. Maximum depth of cut is 2.50 mm (0.0984 inches), reinforcing its role as a finishing rather than roughing insert.
Designed for use in VNMG-style turning toolholders within the ISCAR Isoturn series that accept clamp and pin insert retention. Suitable for machining steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), and special or superalloy (S) workpiece materials.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamp to ensure proper alignment and prevent insert rocking. Do not exceed the rated maximum depth of cut of 2.50 mm, as this is a finishing geometry insert and is not intended for heavy stock removal.
